Conflict of interest: Microsoft provided a complimentary copy of Office 2016 for Mac for this review.

I’m like many Mac users that use Pages on my Mac, but know that Office for Mac is a stronger and does more.  Think having a bigger engine in your car, don’t use it all the time, but when you want it, it’s there.  I found going thru Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, each was well put together, with the user being thought of, and how their usage might be.

Starting with Word, the most used of the Office suite, I easily figured out what i wanted to do.  I have been using prior versions, both 2008 and 2011, so I was surprised it took this long to have a new version, but happy it’s here and I’m using it. My version was part of the new trend of yearly subscriptions, and allowing use on up to 5 computers.  That’s great for a family, in my case it’s only my wife and I so kind of wasted, yet, still only $99 a year, or Microsoft has released a standalone version for $150.  The advantage of the subscription is lots of add’l features, 1 terabyte of storage for example and use on multiple computers or apps for iPad/iPhone…  Here’s a complete breakdown to assist you in your decision: https://products.office.com/en-us/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products

I liked being able to move projects across devices and being able to work in the cloud if I want.  much versatility.  I liked the Design Tab for layouts, colors, fonts, and the Insights Tab for integrating from the web into docs.

In Excel, which I don’t use much, I noted the new ability to suggest ways of viewing data.  Power Point The offers a new Presenter View that displays the current slide, next slide, speaker notes while the new Animation pane give life to designing good presentations and animations.  Outlook has an improved conversation view automatically organizes your inbox around threaded conversations, so you’ll never hunt for related messages again. And the new message preview gives you the first sentence of an email just below the subject line, so you can quickly decide if you want to read it now or come back later.

In short, 2016 new Office for Mac offers many online templates not available before, uses the Retina displays of Macs, and multi-tough gestures of Macs, the new Ribbon is much more intuitive and friendly in a Mac kind of way.  I like that.  It works with Pages from Apple in a brotherly kind of way too.
