Any one who owns Roxio Toast will feel right at home with the interface of Roxio's Popcorn. Popcorn helps you easily make high quality copies of your DVD movies by compressing content to fit on a standard 4.7 GB DVD disk without loss of high video quality and full audio fidelity. Compressing may result in a slight reduction in video quality, but will leave the audio quality unchanged. You can optionally choose to copy only the main movie with a specific language and audio format. This will reduce the amount of compression required and maximize video quality and use of available disc space. Popcorn does not copy encrypted or copy protected DVDs. Popcorn also comes with Discus RE 3.06B and art to create wonderful professional CD and DVD labels that you print on special adhesive paper.
Installation was straight forward. I inserted the CD and a screen displayed 4 icons: Roxio Popcorn, Documentation, Read Me.pdf and Don't Burn It, Toast It: Toast 6 Titanium information. To install Popcorn drag the "Roxio Popcorn" folder to the Applications folder on your hard disk. From there, double-click the Popcorn icon and follow the simple setup assistant instructions. The Popcorn Setup Assistant makes it easy to finish the installation and register the product online. I only wish that software companies would either differentiate between the letter O and the number 0 or just not use them at all. No biggie for me but some newbie users may have difficulties.
I recently made a DVD using Apple iMovie and iDVD as a Christmas gift for family members. It contained a slide show and two movies, all with different tracks of music. It was under 4.7 GB, so I made copies with Roxio's Toast 6 Titanium. If it had been larger as most video projects are, Popcorn would have been used to compress it to a DVD. I used Discus to create artistic holiday labels.
Popcorn can copy:
• Personal DVD-Video discs created with Toast, iDVD, DVD Studio Pro or other DVD authoring software and commercial DVD-Video discs that are not copy-protected.
• DVD-Video single file disk image files from your hard disk.
• DVD-Video VIDEO_TS folders from your hard disk created with DVD Studio Pro and other software products.
Popcorn includes automatic drive support for all DVD formats including dual-layer, multiple copy settings, buffer underrun prevention, and ToastAnywhere network recorder sharing. You can copy only the main movie with flexible extraction on valid non-encrypted disks to maximize video quality.
The included 17 page (paper!) manual is all inclusive. Popcorn is very affordable as the suggested retail price is $49.95 (USD). I highly recommend it highly if you need to compress movies larger than a 4.7 GB DVD disk can hold.
